Designing an Outdoor Kitchen That Actually Works: Expert Advice to Get It Right from the Start

Outdoor kitchens are more popular than ever — and for good reason. They expand your living space, increase your home’s value, and create the perfect setting for casual entertaining or everyday meals. But to build one that truly works for you, it’s essential to focus on design that fits your lifestyle, not just trends.

We spoke with Manny Rivera, founder of My Luxury Outdoors, on the Home Design Podcast, where he shared his top outdoor kitchen planning tips — from smart space selection to budgeting advice — to help you avoid common mistakes and get the most out of your investment.

Start with Function, Not Just a Look

Many homeowners make the mistake of designing their outdoor kitchen based on what looks good on Pinterest, rather than how they’ll actually use the space. Before you get into materials and fancy features, Manny recommends asking:

  • Do you grill often?
  • Is your indoor kitchen close enough that you don’t need another sink outside?
  • How often will you entertain? What’s your daily cooking routine?

Designing around these practical questions ensures your kitchen is functional and truly used. It’s about creating a space that matches your lifestyle.

Don’t Overthink Permits

A common misconception is that building an outdoor kitchen requires a heap of permits. The truth is, the kitchen unit itself is considered “furniture” and doesn’t need a permit. However, if you plan on adding plumbing, electrical, gas, or sewer lines, those will require permits. This distinction simplifies the planning process and sets clearer expectations, especially for those in HOA communities.

Budgeting and Prioritization Ensure Realistic, Functional Outcomes

A great outdoor kitchen doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Manny suggests a baseline budget of $10,000–$15,000 for a fully functional outdoor kitchen with a good-quality grill, sink, refrigerator, and storage. Prioritize the key features — like the grill first, followed by countertops and cabinetry — to keep your costs under control. This strategy allows for future upgrades while keeping costs in check.

Choosing the Right Contractor Is Fundamental

Choosing a qualified contractor is essential to avoid project headaches. Manny advises homeowners to work with a contractor who’s licensed, insured, and can handle all aspects of the project — from plumbing and electrical to cabinetry and fabrication. A single contractor managing the full scope simplifies timelines, reduces costs, and ensures better quality control. This way, you avoid coordinating multiple subcontractors and the risk of delays.

With the right planning and the right team, your outdoor kitchen can be more than just a luxury — it can be a space you actually use and love every day.
